Celebrating 26 Years in the Industry

I'm getting old - just surpassed 26 years of working with POS systems (plus the 14 years that I spent in retail and restaurant management). Contact me if you are in need of some general advice specific to POS systems or if you need a speaker for your next conference or trade show.

As retirement gets closer, I will likely cut back on travel and how often I post to this blog site. The site is close to hitting 2 million unique visitors so I may post less frequently once that 2 million number is surpassed.

Lord willing, I will still keep the blog site up and running (even if I don't post that often) as I know that a lot of you are here for the older Microsoft RMS content.

Next Free & Unbiased Point of Sale Workshop

Wow - so February sure flew by! Here are the details on my next point of sale workshop. As a reminder, these workshops are free and are not sales presentations (I can't sell you anything anyway!).  Given the upcoming liability shift date for EMV, I will be devoting part of the workshop to EMV specifics. The workshop will also cover the following:

  • Differences between point of sale systems designed to run on computers versus point of sale systems designed to run on mobile devices like smartphones and tablets
  • How to budget for a point of sale system
  • What to avoid or common "gotchas' when selecting a point of sale system for your business or organization
  • How to select the best vendor to work with
  • How to use a weighted point spreadsheet to make your final decision
All of this takes place in a free and unbiased environment! The workshop will be at the Boise, ID location of the Idaho Small Business Development center on Tuesday March 31st 2015 from 2pm to 4pm.

Here is a link to more details and registration information:

Point of Sale/EMV Workshops & Speaking Schedule

So I am starting to line up some speaking events for 2015. I'll share details as everything is finalized but wanted to let folks know that I am including more about EMV in my workshop presentations as EMV is something that all of us will have to address before the EMV Liability Shift Date takes place in October of 2015 (in the United States).

The point of sale workshops that I conduct are completely vendor neutral and can be scaled to run anywhere from 45 to 90 minutes. Here are the main topics that I cover in the workshops:
  1. Differences between mobile and computer-based point of sale systems
  2. How to select the right point of sale system
  3. Common "gotchas" to avoid
  4. EMV and Merchant Services
  5. How to determine your point of sale "budget"
  6. How to use a weighted point spreadsheet to make a final purchase decision
Again, all of this is conducted in a vendor neutral environment (not a sales pitch at all) and folks leave the workshop with actual data and information they can use to find the best point of sale system for their business or organization.

Workshops, Trade Shows and Expos

As you may have read in the past, I have conducted point of sale workshops at various trade shows, expos, and organizations across the US over the years. I wanted to let folks know that I am still available to do this. I would ask for travel compensation if the event is outside of the Boise, ID area. My workshops can be scaled to run anywhere from 45 minutes to 3 hours and these are NOT sales presentations.
Again – these are point of sale workshops - not a sales pitch but valid advice as well as a budget related “takeaway”.
I have found the workshops to be best presented for groups in the following situations:
· Trade Shows and Expos that are attended by retail store owners
· Annual conferences for museum organizations
· Annual meetings/events for retail franchise store owners
· Annual meetings/events for retail franchise businesses
· Meetings where a board or group needs help with selecting a point of sale solution
