NCR Silver Updates

Some long overdue updates related to NCR Silver. As a reminder, NCR Silver is a tablet based point of sale system for retail stores and quick serve restaurants. The functionality of NCR Silver falls between what a cash register can do and what a computer-based point of sale system can do.  You pay a monthly subscription fee to use NCR Silver in your iOS device.

Hardware Updates:

NCR Silver runs on Apple®i; iOSTM 6.0 & 7.0 devices. When implementing integrated credit, the NCR Credit Card Reader supports the following devices: iPad® 2, iPad with Retina display (3rd generation), iPad Mini & iPad Mini with Retina Display, iPad Air, iPhone® 4 and iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, 5s and 5c, or iPod touch® 4th and 5th generations.

Previously NCR Silver did not work with hardware designed for 3rd generation iPads or 5th generation iPhones and iPod Touches

New Features in Version 3 of NCR Silver:
  • NCR Silver now supports multiple locations and can scale to meet the needs of retail shops, cafes, bakeries, restaurants or any small business that is expanding. With easy-to-use tools and reports, owners can manage items across all their sites, see a consolidated view of site sales data, and still easily navigate to individual locations for site-level details.
  • Small business owners get more control with the ability to set user roles like Cashier or Manager and to assign permissions so they can grant or limit access to functions such as price override, discounts, returns, voids and tip adjustments.
  • A new Time Clock feature makes everyday easier for small business owners and their employees. Employees simply sign in and out through the app, and owners can export timesheets for payroll.
I've talked to a few places using NCR Silver and the response has been positive but with a note that most retail store owners indicated that they plan on upgrading to a more complete point of sale system "down the road" (ie. something that can print barcode labels and create purchase orders).

New Pricing Option for NCR Silver

Since interest has been steadily growing in the NCR Silver iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch point of sale system, I thought that I should pass along a new pricing option that we can offer. Keep in mind that our $49/month promotional pricing offer expires on June 30th.

As of May 24th, we will be offering an alternate monthly subscription plan.  When you place your orders, you will have an option to choose our existing $79/month (or 5 months at $49/month for orders placed before June 30th plus one month free) unlimited transaction plan or our new $29/month plus 15 cents per transaction plan (all transactions-not just credit).  The lower monthly fee plan is perfect for those businesses who do not do a lot of transactions but want all the benefits of NCR Silver, such as reporting, inventory tracking, mobility, and e-mail marketing.  And for those seasonal businesses, they can be on the $79 plan during their peak seasons and then convert to the $29 plan during their off season.

NCR Silver Available at Staples

An NCR Silver 'bundle' is now available at most Staples stores.  The bundle includes a Receipt Printer, iPad Stand, Cash Drawer, and Credit Card Swipe.  A 30 day free trial version of NCR Silver is also included.  The normal bundle price is $499 but a $100 rebate applies for purchases made before January 5th, 2013.

Here is a link to more information on the Staples web site: http://www.staples.com/NCR-Silver-POS-Cash-Register-System-for-iPad/product_100599

Of note, offering point of sale solutions through office supply stores is not something new - Intuit offered their QuickBooks Point of Sale bundles through office supply stores for several years.

The $499 price point is great but keep in  mind that you still need to pay the monthly NCR Silver fee after the 30 free trial period (currently at $79/month or a total cost of $4740 over 5 years - yikes!).  An iPad is not included, nor is a barcode scanner or customer pole display.  You also can't print barcode labels/shelf tags using NCR Silver.

If you truly can't afford to invest in a point of sale system (or obtain leasing/funding for a system), then NCR Silver is a viable option to a cash register.  Just keep in mind that you will likely end up spending $6000 - $7000 on NCR Silver over the course of 5 years.  For comparison, a complete Windows-based point of sale system would have a 5 year cost starting around $4000-$6000.

I have some comparison charts showing what Silver can and can't do compared to a true point of sale system.
